IAEE Başkanı Prof. Dr. Gürkan Kumbaroğlu, enerji sektörünün 21. yüzyılda en fazla büyüyen sektörlerin başında geleceğini belirterek, iktisadından, mühendislik fakültelerine kadar çok sayıda bölüm için bu sektörün çok önemli iş kapısı olabileceğini bildirdi.

Kumbaroğlu: “Temiz ve refah düzeyi yüksek bir gelecek için enerji sektörünü keşfedin.”

Gelecek planlaması yapan gençlere“21. yüzyılın sektörü” olarak ifade edilen enerji sektörünü keşfetmeleri önerildi. Uluslararası Enerji Ekonomisi Birliği (IAEE) Seçilmiş Başkanı,Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Öğretim Üyesi Prof. Dr. Gürkan Kumbaroğlu, #enerjimvarken konferanslarına Marmara Üniversitesi’nde başladı. Üniversitenin Ekonomi Bilimleri Araştırma Topluluğu iş birliği ile İbrahim Üzümcü Konferans Salonu’nda düzenlenen konferansta gençlere enerji sektörünün geleceğine dairipuçları veren Kumbaroğlu, yaklaşık 200 öğrencinin yer aldığı anket çalışmasınıda değerlendirdi.

Anketlerden gençlerin yarıya yakın gibi çok ciddi bölümünün gelecekteki 10 yılda doğanın durumunun çok daha kötü olacağını düşündüğünü, bu karamsar tablonun giderilmesinin hepimizin elinde olduğunu anlatan Kumbaroğlu, şunları söyledi:

“Doğanın korunması, yaşam standardının yükselmesi, pırıl pırıl aydınlık bir dünyanın anahtarı enerji sektörünün elinde. Bugün dünya iklimini tehdit eden sera gazı sorununun giderilmesi, diğer çevresel sorunların kabusa dönüştürecek bir dünya yaratmaması için hepimizin attığımız her adıma dikkat etmemiz gerekiyor. Bu aşamada en fazla enerjicilere iş düşüyor. Sağlıklı, bol ve ucuz enerjiye ulaşmak için eskilerden çok ama çok daha fazla efor sarf etmemiz şart.”

Kumbaroğlu, enerji sektöründeki gelişmelerin konforlu bir gelecek alt yapısı kurarken, çok ciddi istihdamlar dayatacağının altını çizerek, özellikle üniversitelilere bu sektörü “es geçmemeleri” önerisinde bulundu.

Sektör henüz emekleme döneminde

Gürkan Kumbaroğlu, ülkemizde enerji sektörünün henüz emekleme düzeyinde olduğunu, gelişen ve büyüyen Türkiye ile Türkiye’nin bulunduğu coğrafya açısından 21. yüzyılın enerji alanında yapılacak yatırımlarla gündeme damgasını vuracağını belirterek, şöyle devam etti:

“Şimdi bu sadece mühendislik işi diyebilirsiniz. Yanılıyorsunuz. Enerji sektörüne hemen her branştan ihtiyaç var. Örneğin şirketler geleceği ön görebilmek için çok ciddi oranda enerji ekonomistleri çalıştırıyor. Ülkemizdeki BTC yatırımlarını hatırlayalım; çok ciddi eğitim çalışması yaptılar, bu konuda yüzlerce eğitmene başvuruldu. Enerji talebi hızlı büyüyor. Ülkemizde yıllık ortalama uzun vade artışı yüzde 8’lerde.Bu alanla ilgili çok sayıda iş kapısı açılıyor ve daha da açılacak. Sizlere temiz ve refah düzeyi yüksek bir gelecek için enerji sektörünü keşfetmenizi öneriyorum.”

IAEE President-ElectProf. Dr. Gürkan Kumbaroğlu has indicated that the energy sector will be one ofthe most rapidly growing sectors in the twenty-first century, and that it willopen up new job opportunities for various disciplines ranging from economics toengineering.

Kumbaroğlu: “Explore the energy sector for a clean andwealthy future”

It has been suggested that the young generation whose makingcareer plans exlpores the energy sector as “the sector of the twenty-firstcentury”.

President-Elect of the International Association for EnergyEconomics (IAEE), Boğaziçi University Professor Gürkan Kumbaroğlu, started theseries of #enerjimvarken conferences at Marmara University. Results of a surveywith  participation of nearly 200students were evaluated bu Kumbaroğlu who gave hints on the future of theenergy sector at the conference organized with suppport of the university’sEconomic Sciences Research Society at the İbrahim Üzümcü Conference Center.

Indicating that a serious portion of survey participants,almost half of the respondents, were thinking that the natural habitat willworsen, Kumbaroğlu noted that it is in the hands of mankind to change thefuture. Kumbaroğlu said

“The energy sector iskey to a bright future with a preserved nature and increased standard of life.We all need to be careful in our daily habits so as to contribute for themitigation of the greenhouse gas problem that threatens our global climate. Theresponsibility for a better future rests most on energy professionals. Muchmore effort is needed today for an economically as well as ecologicallysustainable energy future.”

Kumbaroğlu has suggested that university students don’tignore the energy sector as it will provide for serious employmentopportunities while establishing the necessary infrastructure for a comfortablefuture.

The sector is stillatits infancy

Gürkan Kumbaroğlu has noted that the energy sector is stillin its infancy in Turkey and will shape the future agenda with large-scaleinvestments in the twenty-first century as a result of Turkey’s geographicalposition. He continued his speech as follows:

“You can say this is engineering work. You are wrong. Theenergy sector needs knoledge and expertise from all disciplines. Energyeconomists are needed for example to better predict the future. Let’s consider theBTC  investments in our country; seriouseffort has been put innto education, with hundreds of instructors involved. Electricitydemand grows at an average rate of about 8% in our country. Employmentopportunities are being generated and will continue to be generated at ancaccelerated rate. I recommend you to explore the  energy sector for a clean and wealthy future.”

Gürkan Kumbaroğlu is a Professorof Industrial Engineering at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. He is theFounding Director and Chairman of the Board of the Energy Policy Research Centerat Boğaziçi University.

Professor Kumbaroğlu holds aPh.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from the Middle East TechnicalUniversity, Ankara, Turkey. He has worked as a guest researcher at the Centerfor Energy Policy and Economics, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH)Zurich, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, US. He was a visitingprofessor at RWTH Aachen University,Germany; the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil; the Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing, China; the University of Campinas, Brazil; and the Universityof Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Professor Kumbaroğlu has receivedTurkey’s first Energy Oscar in thecategory of Scientific Contribution toEnergy Markets, awarded at the 17^th International Energy andEnvironment Conference in 2011. He has further received the Visiting Professorship Award for SeniorInternational Scientists, awarded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in2012.

Professor Kumbaroğlu is anEditorial Board member of the journals Sustainability,Innovative Energy Policies, and Journal of Self-Governance and ManagementEconomics. He published numerous peer-reviewed articles as well as severalbook chapters on energy and environmental policy.

Professor Kumbaroğlu is a memberof the Executive and Supervisory Board of the Center for Economics and ForeignPolicy Studies EDAM. He is the Founding President of the Turkish Associationfor Energy Economics EED and President Elect of the International Associationfor Energy Economics IAEE.
